Supervisors and Agents employed by Organisation and Companies who are responsible for excavation in the highway.

Course Aims

To enable candidates to understand the requirements of the Code of Practice for backfill and compaction of excavations in the highway.

Course Objectives

On completion each candidate will be able to:

  1. Understand the principles of the highway structure together with the function of the construction layers.
  2. Recognise types of soils and their properties in road making.
  3. Carry out field tests to check for suitability of materials for backfill.
  4. Understand the requirements of the Code of Practice for the reinstatement of openings in the highway.
  5. Understand the requirements of the Code of Practise for the classification, suitability and compaction of backfill materials.
  6. Describe the measures to be taken to ensure the safety and support of existing underground apparatus.
  7. Recognise the types and suitability of compaction equipment.
